"The aim of these studies is to impart to the voice ample flexibility and smoothness so that it may be rendered capable of executing, with ease and elegance, coloratura passsages and embellishments contained in the works of our great composers. They should assist the Vocalist in the same way that Czerny's 'School of Velocity' does for the pianist. Starting from the principle that it is impractical to practice several difficult passages at a time, I begin with exercises for two, three and four tones, in order to advance by steps to more difficult exercises, leaving it to the discretion of the teacher gradually to transpose them a semitone up or down."
