Description

This work is built on alternating variations of two chorale themes: Aus meines Herzens Grunde (From the depths of my heart), attributed to an anonymous composer (c. 1598) and based on a sixteenth-century melody, and Wir pflügen and wir streuen (We plough and we scatter), published anonymously in the Hanover collection Lieder für Volksschulen (1800), but later attributed to Johann A. P. Schulz in Lindner's Berlin collection Jungenfreund (1812).

The variations contrast in tonality, registration, and character.

  • Allegro: the theme of Aus meines Herzens Grunde is presented in a light, joyful siciliana rhythm.
  • Moderato: the refrain Alle gute Gabe (All good gifts) from the chorale Wir pflügen and wir streuen is played in the pedal, accompanied by a perpetuum mobile of sixteenth notes in the manual.
  • Andante: the theme of Aus meines Herzens Grunde is ornamented on the oboe.
  • Con moto: the melody of Alle gute Gabe develops in triplets on the soft 8' stops.
  • Maestoso: the theme of Aus meines Herzens Grunde is paraphrased with ornamentation on a cornet stOp.
  • Allegro con spirito: the two themes alternate in a modulating tonal progression, with a rhythmic, martial, and jubilant character.
