The Sonata da Chiesa (Church Sonata) reflects the composer's fascination with cathedrals, particularly the one (the Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, New York) in which he was a chorister as a child. The Latin titles of the movements reflect the mood of the music: I. Exaltation, II. O Great Mystery, III. Adoration, IV. Jubilation, V. O Lamb of God, VI. Grant Us Thy Peace, VII. Exaltation.
