Description

Cellist Friedrich Dotzauer (1783–1860), though best remembered for his pedagogical legacy, was also a prolific and successful composer and a pioneering string quartet performer in Leipzig and Dresden. in addition to many solo works for his own instrument, Dotzauer wrote some twenty-five string quartets and numerous other chamber works, many of which feature the cello in a prominent role. This edition presents four of Dotzauer's quartets that together demonstrate the versatility of his writing. The three quartets of opus 19, with their more modest technical demands and the conventional distribution of material between the four instruments, was likely intended for amateur, private music-making, whereas the opus 29 quartet, which features more virtuosic writing for the first violin and cello, was probably conceived for the public concert sphere. Both opuses reveal Dotzauer's noteworthy compositional skills through their comprehensive development of motives and sophisticated treatment of texture and form.

Contents:

Three String Quartets, Op. 19

  • String Quartet No. 1 in G Major
  • String Quartet No. 2 in B-flat Major
  • String Quartet No. 3 in D Major
