Description

The virtuosic Rhapsody for Tenor Horn in E-flat and Piano (Op. 76) was composed in 2007. Although generally known primarily in wind bands, the alto horn's brilliant sound in its high register and its great flexibility have been highly valued by various classical composers. The endeavor to fuse the sound of this particular instrument with the spectral richness of the piano resulted in an entirely new chamber music sound for both instruments. The character of this rhapsody combines rhapsodic features of Franz Liszt's virtuosity with Johannes Brahms's epic power. One can discern the composer's admiration for Debussy's première rhapsodie for clarinet and piano in the elaboration of the motifs, the contrasts of timbre, the structural pivots, the search for a new tonality and modality based on a rigorous motivic grouping, and the spectral ideas that Debussy initiated—despite the fact that the aesthetics of this composition are modernist.

In the piano, the combination of the sustain pedal and the right pedal accumulates the concepts of sound, often leading to sudden, detailed contrasts through articulation and reverberation of sound spectra, in contrast to the mere sustaining of clearly distinguishable chords. The composition is characterized by the unique idea of regulating the sound on the piano through pedal, articulation, and the force with which the keys are struck. The typical improvisational character of a rhapsody can be heard in the solo cadenzas, which are played alternately by the two musicians.
