Description

for Alto or Baritone Solo, Jazz Vocal Ensemble (SSAATTBB), and Piano

Margaret Bonds's Mist over Manhattan was originally written as a lovers' duet for her co-authored play Midtown Affair (1958) – a timely noir drama about interracial romance and the deadly obstacles racism poses to love. At some point later on Bonds recast the duet as a solo for alto (or baritone) with eight-part jazz vocal ensemble and piano, drawing on smooth elegance of vocal jazz of the late 1950s – represented most famously in the solo artistry of Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958, or many of the vocal jazz groups of the time.
