Description

What does the Second Amendment mean? Who has the right to bear arms? It was the Black Panthers who, in the 1960s, pioneered the argument that this right applies to private citizens as well as militias. This piece quotes two songs long associated with the Civil Rights movement: Lift Every Voice and Sing (1900) by James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamund Johnson, often called the "Black National Anthem;" and the core rhythm from James Brown's Say It Loud (1968). The piece also quotes Will the Circle Be Unbroken.

Commissioned by Orchestra 2001 as part of its commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
