Description

Saint-Saëns's two "official" piano trios—No. 1 in F Major, Op. 18, and No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 92—rank among the core works of the genre, as evidenced by their many performances and recordings. Both works are published here for the first time in a historical-critical edition. in particular, numerous newly discovered sources have been consulted for the Second Trio, differing so substantially from one another that the finale is presented in two distinct versions.

True additions to the repertoire include Saint-Saëns's arrangement of his celebrated Trumpet Septet, Op. 65, as well as the original version of the duo "La Muse et le Poète", Op. 132. Last but not least, this richly annotated volume contains two first publications: an early (and entirely playable) Piano Trio fragment in G Major by the thirteen-year-old Saint-Saëns, which reveals some of the young composer's musical models; alongside it appears the apocryphal arrangement of a movement from the "Oratorio de Noël", Op. 12, known only from a shellac recording.

Each of the six works included in this volume combines, in its own distinctive and original way, established stylistic and generic models and traditions with contemporary musical currents, uniting the familiar with the unexpected. All six embody what Charles Lecocq wrote of the E Minor Trio, Op. 92, in 1893: "It is always a pleasure for me to read works such as this Trio, which is at once thoroughly modern in its style and yet never disavows the art that we were taught at school, and which I hold so dear."
