Description

I composed this music using tonal material derived from several rows of intervals, connected like a dialogue. It is one of the rare compositions written entirely at the desk. That was in 1987 during my brief serial phase. At the time, I started by writing the work Nah or fern (Near or far) for viola solo, which later evolved into a new work for cello. I wanted to try writing music without practical experiments on an instrument. However, it proved impossible for me to rely solely on the intellectual conception in my mind, so I began singing my ideas. Perhaps that's why this music consists of phrases – because when you sing, you eventually run out of breath...

The music remains open... Inner Dialogue can be interpreted very freely, not necessarily adhering exactly to the bar lines, but rather ad libitum with compression or lengthening of the note values. Likewise, individual parts can be omitted or reassembled in different forms. This offers a wide range of individual creative possibilities, allowing performers to bring in their own ideas.I deliberately chose a very lively, differentiated dynamic. The atmosphere of this phrase-like, form-seeking music thrives on the intense dynamic expression, perhaps just because I'm not a desk composer after all.

My heartfelt thanks go to Beverley Ellis, who in July 2023, played the music that I had composed so long ago, and brought it back to life for me. She helped me with cello-specific questions, also adding fingerings and bowings.
