Between 1895 and 1903 Jean Sibelius composed ten piano pieces that, following their first publication, were taken over by Breitkopf & Härtel and combined as, Op. 24. This opus includes Sibelius's most popular and often-played piano pieces in the style of nationalistic romanticism. The tuneful Romance is the ninth piece in the cycle and was composed in 1901 as a Christmas gift for one of the composer's friends.
