Description

Jean-Philippe Rameau's Premier livre de pièces de clavecin (1706) was his first published collection for harpsichord, issued when he was still little known in Paris. Engraved by Claude Roussel and sold from several addresses—including Rameau's own home—the collection remained in circulation for decades, with later issues as late as 1741, by which time Rameau had become the leading French composer of his day. Though the music reflects the style of contemporaries like Louis Marchand and Gaspard Le Roux, its rarity is striking: only one copy of each issue is known to survive. This facsimile presents the collection in its original engraved form, faithfully reproduced for performers and scholars alike.

Published as part of the Critical Facsimiles® series, which combines the textual reliability of critical editions with the authenticity of facsimiles, this volume provides the "ideal text" of the work, collated against relevant sources and accompanied by a full critical apparatus.
