Description

Fetonte was set by the composer Domenico Paradies for the London Italian opera season of 1746–47. The season was a fascinating and adventurous one, managed by the impresario Francesco Vanneschi, who is also credited with authoring the opera's text. Fetonte was the season's standout work; Vanneschi's libretto nodded to the structures of seventeenth-century French opera with integrated dance and action, the type of drama that would be cited in the discourse of later "opera reform" as an ideal way of dealing with abuses of composition and performance. These ideas were outlined in John Lockman's A Discourse on the Operas, published in Fetonte's libretto; he argued the case for a greater integration of all opera's elements and for making "no contemptible defense of the musical drama." Fetonte is an attempted realization of Lockman's ideals and an audacious move by Vanneschi to introduce a new genre of music theatre.
