Description

The Neue Berliner Musikzeitung reported on June 2, 1881: "Princess Mestschersky honored the well-known composer Emilie Mayer with a magnificent piece of jewelery for the dedication of the Faust Overture". Emilie Mayer had both her 1879 Faust Overture for large orchestra and the arrangement of the orchestral overture for piano four hands by Berthold Knetsch printed. This allowed her "Faust composition" to find its way into house music, where the piano was the focus. She dedicated both prints to the Russian princess Maria Mestchersky, who lived in Berlin.

The idea of using print and dedication to gain publicity for her new work paid off. As early as February 1881 there was the first performance of the Faust Overture in the capital of the German Empire by the "Berliner Sinfonie-Capelle". It is performed four times in Stettin; acclaimed by concert audiences in Carlsbad, Prague and Vienna over the course of the winter. The Faust overture for orchestra has also been published by Furore (fue2646).
