Description

Dedicated to and premiered by Liz Karney, McKayla Philips, Nick Martinez, and Lauren Molloy at the 2018 Sō Percussion Summer Institute Princeton PhD Concert, ambedo is an evocative work for percussion quartet. The composition finds its conceptual roots in John Koenig's The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, a creative literary project designed to fill gaps in the English language by giving names to deeply felt yet previously indescribable emotions.

The title draws directly from Koenig's specific definition of "ambedo," which describes a melancholic trance where a person becomes completely absorbed in vivid sensory details, such as raindrops skittering down a window or clouds of cream swirling in coffee. This intense observation ultimately yields a dawning awareness of the haunting fragility of life. To musically translate this delicate and highly tactile atmosphere, the quartet employs specialized tools, utilizing bows and plastic banjo finger picks to craft an intimately resonant and deeply absorbing soundscape.
