Description

Commissioned by and dedicated to Doug O'Connor, Consume by... is a fifteen-minute chamber work that premiered at the Kennedy Center as part of the "Saxophone Genesis" program. Completed in June 2019, the piece is scored for a mixed octet featuring flute, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, percussion, piano, electric bass, and amplified cello.

The composition serves as an exploration of rhythm and the concept of the "beat" in its many forms. This includes the acoustic interference of sound waves, instrumental vibrato, deliberate repetition, and an embodied sense of physical pulse. To contrast these rhythmic focal points, the work also investigates the absence of a beat and the structural metamorphosis from one pulse to another. Throughout the piece, all elements of timbre, harmony, melody, and contour are filtered strictly through a rhythmic lens.

While the title mimics the language of an expiration date, the underlying message of the piece is one of motivation. The urgent energy of the music acts as a call to action, encouraging the listener to actively pursue the things they wish or need to accomplish in their lives.
