Description

Revised 2026

Hockney's Shoes was inspired by David Hockney's exhibition ‘82 Portraits and 1 Still-life', which I saw at the Royal Academy in London in 2016. When I first saw these portraits, I found myself looking almost as much at the shoes as at the people wearing them. Hockney understood that footwear can tell us an extraordinary amount about a person. Boots, pumps, loafers, baseball shoes — each seemed to bring its own identity, attitude and way of moving through the world.

I began to imagine the shoes themselves as characters: some striding purposefully, some shuffling along, some made for dressing up, and others simply for having fun.

The music is a breathless and rapidly changing mosaic of moods, gestures and textures. One personality appears, establishes itself for a moment, and then is replaced by another, often in quite unexpected ways. The saxophones seemed particularly well suited to this idea with their energy and agility, as well as lyricism and warmth.

I wanted the piece to be fun to play and listen to, but also to have the sense of discovery and surprise that I experienced looking at Hockney's portraits. Hockney's Shoes is a playful, energetic work that invites the players — and their audience — to enjoy each facet of these musical personalities.
