Description

While the name Anton Eberl (1765–1807) may be unfamiliar today, even among music connoisseurs, during his lifetime he was regarded as one of the most prominent composers of Beethoven's generation. Among his many instrumental compositions is a single opus of string quartets, a set of three in E-flat Major, D Major, and G Minor, published by Mollo in 1801 and dedicated to Czar Alexander I of Russia. These quartets demonstrate Eberl's idiosyncratic approach to individual movement forms and harmonic structure within the four-movement Classical Viennese quartet model. Based on the original Mollo print, this edition balances the presentation of a clear, performable version of the quartets with a transparent approach to the many notational ambiguities of its source.
