Description

Part III of the Musicalischen Divertissiments (1728) comprises six trio sonatas for oboe, violin and basso — an almost inevitable combination, given that Bodinus began his career as an oboist before effectively setting the instrument aside in favour of the violin. These works promulgate the sonata model established in Part I of the Musicalischen Divertissiments: fundamentally sonate da chiesa, yet several introduce dance movements foreign to the Corellian prototype, including the menuet, bourrée and siciliana, while others feature imitative movements entitled ‘fuga'. Given the scarcity of trio-sonata sets written specifically for oboe, violin and continuo, the publication of this first modern edition of Part III should be welcomed by performers on these instruments.

Taken together, these works represent a significant yet long-overlooked contribution to the early 18th-century German repertoire for double reeds, just as they testify to Bodinus' inventive engagement with contemporary sonata forms.
