Description

The work belongs to an early period of Berwald's career. At the time, he was still serving as a violinist and violist in the Royal Court Orchestra in Stockholm and was thus intimately familiar with the orchestral possibilities. Unlike in his later, formally unconventional symphonies, his compositional focus here is on a specific historical event. Nevertheless, the work is not limited to a mere succession of military effects. Berwald portrays the battle as an interplay of foreboding and departure, order and chaos, threat and hope. From individual sonic gestures emerges a coherent dramatic structure that interprets the historical events from a distinctly Swedish perspective.
