Description

Written for the Elevate Ensemble, featuring conductor Chad Goodman and harpsichordist Derek Tam, The Color Festivals is a six-movement chamber work inspired by Abbie Phillips Walker's 1916 children's book, Told by the Sandman. Modeled conceptually after Maurice Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, the composition is designed to engage children while remaining musically intricate for adults.

The stories selected for this suite highlight non-traditional fairy tale elements, frequently featuring clever female protagonists and helpful witches. Musically, the work centers on the capabilities of the harpsichord. It draws from historical keyboard traditions by incorporating figured bass, unmeasured preludes, and arpeggiation requests, which grant the performer space for stylistic improvisation.
