Description

This composition was commisioned by it's dedicatee Professor of Forensic Child and Youth Care Geert Jan Stams, who decided to use the famous etching by Francisco Goya as a ‘Leitmotif' for his farewell speech at the University in Amsterdam May 2026.

I have carefully sought to translate into music all the aspects that Professor Stams considered important in this etching, which are reflected in his arguments below.

-Goya's ‘The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters' suggests that when reason falls asleep, imagination becomes detached from reason, giving rise to superstition, irrationality, and fear, and potentially contributing to social injustice. It suggests that imagination and reason are only fruitful when they work together. The manuscript explanation associated with the Prado impression states that imagination, "united with reason," is "the mother of the arts and the source of their wonders." Extended to the present, Goya's insight points to a productive relation between science and art: knowledge gives imagination direction, while imagination enables knowledge to envision what does not yet exist. Although science and art are commonly treated today as separate domains, their historical interconnectedness suggests that bringing knowledge and imagination together may be essential to creativity, discovery, and a fuller understanding of the world.-
