Description

Nina d'Aubigny von Engelbrunner was a vocal pedagogue, composer of vocal music, and an accomplished author during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. She was also praised for her fine singing as a contralto during her brief singing career. Born in Kassel, Germany on April 15, 1770, d'Aubigny lived a rich life traveling, running her own businesses, performing, teaching, and writing.

Although her musical output was significantly smaller than her literary output, the quality, richness, and oftentimes, the complexity of her compositions is evident. D'Aubigny's song collection Deutsche, Italienische and Franzӧsische Gesӓnge mit Begleitung des Pianoforte (German, Italian and French Songs with Piano Accompaniment) showcases a wide range of her compositional style. The collection was her first music publication documented, and it comprises approximately forty percent of her total known published compositional output. In total, there are thirty songs (three collections and five individual songs) known to have been composed by Nina d'Aubigny von Engelbrunner, published between 1797 and 1807.
