    Description

Written in 1934, Hommage à Satie was the first work of David Diamond's to be performed in New York City in a concert at the New School of Social Research in 1935. Born in Rochester, NY on July 9, 1915, Diamond has always demonstrated a strong attraction to the French school of composition. After studies at the Cleveland Institute, the Eastman School of Music and the Dalcroze Institute in New York, he was one of the many young Americans who made the journey to Fontainebleau, outside of Paris, to study at Nadia Boulanger's American Conservatory. Diamond's style has evolved considerably since the 1930's, but his essentially lyrical nature is beautifully revealed in this lovely tribute to the eccentric master of early 20th century French music, Eric Satie. Hommage is a continuously evolving slow movement with several lively interruptions suggestive of "dance hall" music and the scoring for single winds (2 flutes), 2 horns, harp, cymbals and strings has the lucidity characteristic of the French school.
