String Quartet No. 8 (2002) by Gloria Coates is a 15-minute work in three movements:
It was commissioned for the 50th European Weeks Passau "For a Europe and a World of Freedom, Peace, and Friendship" to commemorate the September 11th tragedy.
The first movement, On Wings of Sound , is music in contemplation before the confrontation. The title of the second, "In Falling Timbers Buried" , is taken from a poem by Emily Dickinson for which Gloria Coates had once composed the music. Fragments of this composition are used in the movement. The third movement is a Prayer for peace and humanity.
String Quartet No. 8 was first performed on June 20, 2002, in Passau, Germany, by the Henschel Quartet..
