    Description

Cage wrote ear for EAR as a commission from EAR Magazine in celebration of its tenth anniversary. It is a very simple composition, consisting of one page with eleven lines of music composed in antiphonal style, a solo statement with a choral response. The subtitle (Antiphonies) refers to works in the Roman-Catholic Liturgy, in which two choirs sing in alternation. The text is wordless and uses only the letters found in the word EAR. Cage indicates that the singing should be without vibrato and in one breath, and that the dynamics should be p-pp. As he recounted in an interview printed in Audio Arts Magazine - Volume 6, 1983), "I called it Ear for EAR thinking of the omission in the Bible of 'ear for ear'. They say 'tooth for tooth' and 'an eye for an eye', but they didn't say anything about an ear."
