Description

Premium Library Edition.

With the encouragement of his remarkable musician father, George Edward Ives (1845–1894), Charles Ives (1874–1954) entered early into his experiments in polytonality and burlesques. Scattered among Ives's manuscripts are what we now group as "exercises," composed mostly in the 1890s. The great pianist and Ives cataloguer John Kirkpartick classified these into two groups: "Strict" (17 items) and "Polytonal & Burlesque" (22 items). These pieces are presented here in the order established in James B. Sinclair's A Descriptive Catalogue of the Music of Charles Ives (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1999). The manuscript source for each exercise is identified by a frame number (e.g. f7444).
