Description

Completed in 1962 but probably started at least five years previously, A Divertimento for String Orchestra was given its first incomplete performance by the Dartford Symphony Orchestra in 1964. It is dedicated to the composer's wife Brenda Copley. The movements need little individual comment for, as my father once pointed out, they are intended to do little more than divert. The second movement is inscribed to the memory of Gerald Finzi who died in 1956, while the third was based on a tune for recorder written by a seven-year-old Oxford schoolboy, Andrew Goodwin, who later became organist at Bangor Cathedral. The fourth movement introduces the country-dance tune Ballingery. Finally the last movement, which the composer described as an ‘orchestral romp' makes reference to the folk song I have house and land in Kent – possibly an autobiographical allusion, as my father had at the time the former, if not the latter.
