Description

Written in Paris between April 1893 and October 1894, the single-movement Concert Piece is Hopekirk's largest surviving work. It belongs to her early explorations in orchestral composition and commingles Romantic gestures and ornamentation with elements of Scottish music, such as pentatonic scales and ancient modes, which Hopekirk regarded as "the underlying unity of many folk songs from different countries." Lasting around twenty minutes, the work blends the elements and impulses that would shape her later output and define her identity as a composer.
