Description

Phil Edwards' piece is dedicated to the very well-known British clarinetist. Phil Edwards and his duo partner David Elwin premiered the piece in Brighton in August 2024.

Philology is divided into three movements. Its two outer movements are full of energy, dynamism, and drive, yet quite different. The first movement is playful and ethereal, the third wilder and more dramatic.

The second movement is based throughout on a rhythmic ostinato of 24 plus 26 quarter notes. The ostinato is played by the piano, initially in unison, then, gradually developing, towards the end of the movement in eight-note chords. This piano part is virtuously and imaginatively embellished by the clarinet with large leaps, arpeggios, and trills.

In Philology, the clarinet can beautifully showcase its rich sound, wide tonal range, and many different expressive possibilities, with the piano as an equal partner. It is a piece for musicians who love rhythm, color, and a certain challenge in their music.
