Description

"Embarking on a journey into the open sea is challenging in its own right, but diving headfirst into a task greater than anything you have ever faced requires a considerable dose of recklessness."

Published in 1824, The Cello School, Op. 65, by Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer (1783–1860) is much more than a stormy sea or an iceberg on a chilly night: it is a gargantuan, mythological creature from a forgotten past. Spanning over 150 pages of technical text, musical examples, and two rigorous appendices, it was a monumental achievement of its time—an incredible masterwork with a mammoth price tag to match.

This new publication brings that history to your music stand. It features the two-octave scales from the first appendix of the Cello School, often providing dual fingering options—one utilizing open strings and one avoiding them entirely. Alongside these scales are thirty-five dynamic practice ideas, carefully elaborated from the duets that originally accompanied Dotzauer's text.

The first 13 practice ideas are Dotzauer's own, serving as an essential blueprint for mastering all other scales. Drawing inspiration from the accompaniments of his original 50 duets, the editor has crafted additional patterns and technical challenges to maximize the developmental benefits of the scales themselves.

This comprehensive 28-page score includes a thorough editorial section and detailed descriptions of each scale and exercise, leaving nothing to chance. This edition proudly continues our ongoing journey to revive the foundational cello schools that have shaped our instrument's history!
