Description

Composed in Rome in 1860 as his second-year Prix de Rome submission, Georges Bizet's Vasco de Gama is a sweeping thirty-minute ode-symphonie inspired by the Portuguese epic The Lusiads. Scored for a reciter, three vocal soloists, a six-part chorus, and a grand orchestra, the work dramatically chronicles the legendary explorer's monumental maritime voyage around Africa. Although Bizet only ever completed the first part of this ambitious project, it stands as a thrilling testament to his early theatrical instincts and expanding mastery of orchestral color. Presented here in a meticulous edition by musicologist Hugh Macdonald and recently featured in the Bru Zane Portraits recording series, this rarity offers a vibrant glimpse into the young composer's developing genius.
