Description

Composed in 1865 for a choral competition in northern France, Saint-Jean de Patmos is an eight-minute work crafted to challenge the superior technical abilities of Belgian male choirs. As Bizet's only known unaccompanied choral work, it sets verses from Victor Hugo's Les Contemplations with a complexity and "elevated character" that staggered his contemporaries. Presented here in a first modern edition by musicologist Hugh Macdonald, this rarity offers a compelling glimpse into a lesser-known chapter of the composer's output.
