Description

In addition to his ten piano sonatas, Allen Sapp composed a great number of additional piano works. This edition presents nine of his most substantial compositions for solo piano spanning nearly fifty years. The volume begins with three early neoclassical works. Four Scenes in One Act is a set of four piano pieces composed in early 1943 for his fiancée, pianist Norma Bertolami, just before he began his service in the U.S. Army during World War II. Sonatina I is Sapp's first significant post-war composition, completed while stationed near Munich in late 1945. His Suite for Piano (1949) is dedicated to his teacher Aaron Copland. The next three works in this volume were composed while on sabbatical from Harvard and living in Rome in 1956–57: Seven Bagatelles, Four Impromptus, and Sonatina II. The volume concludes with his three virtuosic piano fantasies, the first written for Lily Dumont in 1960, the second inspired by Rachmaninoff and written for Elisabeth Pridonoff in 1990, and the third composed in 1992 in "Homage to Mendelssohn" and dedicated to his wife, Norma Bertolami Sapp.
