Description

This seventh volume of Henry Du Mont's grand motets, edited by Thomas Leconte and published by the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles, concludes the study of the composer's works intended for the Royal Chapel of Louis XIV. The preface examines the evolution of musical ensembles between 1660 and 1683, in parallel with the evolution of Du Mont's writing.

The volume contains the last five motets from the 1686 edition, composed "by express command of His Majesty," representative of Du Mont's entire output. It also includes two motets from the Düben collection (Uppsala, Sweden), for five voices and basso continuo, including Media vita , which is part of the Chapel's repertoire.

This volume completes the comprehensive study of Du Mont's grand motets and offers an overview of his career as assistant master of the Royal Chapel, a period during which Louis XIV continually expanded the music of the Court and brought the repertoire of daily Mass closer to that of extraordinary ceremonies. Building on the work of the previous volumes, Thomas Leconte invites us to consider how Du Mont integrated these developments into his writing.
