Description

Composed in January 1855 by a sixteen-year-old Georges Bizet, Valse avec chœur is a choral work written during his studies at the Paris Conservatoire. Produced for Fromental Halévy's composition class, the piece served as a practical training exercise for the preliminary rounds of the Prix de Rome, which required students to set chorus texts from earlier French operas.

For this assignment, Bizet selected a text by Eugène Scribe from Act II of Henri Reber's 1848 opéra-comique, La Nuit de Noël. Scored for a six-part mixed chorus and orchestra, the composition sets lyrics portraying the waltz as a winter pastime that drives away dark memories. The piece is presented here in a modern edition by musicologist Hugh Macdonald.
