Description

My Five Catches were commissioned by Tom Hicks, for his advanced students, with generous support from the Vaughan Williams Foundation. As well as concert pieces, they serve as studies in rhythmic precision, dynamics, articulation and cross phrasing. Each catch is dedicated to one of Tom's students.

The Caccia was a popular genre of vocal music in 14th Century Europe, especially in Italy. They are usually duets (sometimes with an additional bass part or drone) in which the voices chase each other in imitative counterpoint or canon. Inspired by watching the squirrels chasing each other around the branches of the large oak trees behind my house, my catches re-imagine this genre for piano solo. The hands continually chase one another across the keyboard. All are fast. All are fun. They may be played as individual pieces or as a set.
