Description

Published in early 1595, Marenzio's VI a 6 is his last six-voice book. of its twenty-one madrigals, two large cycles dominate: the seven-part setting of Petrarch's Giovane donna sott'un verde lauro and the ten-madrigal treatment of Tansillo's Se quel dolor che va innanzi al morire, framed by works tied to the dedicatee Margherita Gonzaga. Lucida perla (from Guarini's 1579 wedding eclogue) opens, and Tasso's Là dove sono i pargoletti Amori with the echo madrigal O verdi selve closes. The book contrasts festive Ferrarese brilliance with the graver, harmony-focused idiom of the mid-1590s, forming a tailored homage to the Duchess and to the courts of Mantua and Ferrara.

Luca Marenzio: The Secular Works is a critical edition based on the most authoritative printed sources, collated with all relevant editions and, where useful, manuscript evidence. It is intended equally for study and performance, with clear, singer-friendly scores that adhere closely to the originals while remaining readable for modern ensembles.
