Description

The Feast of the Epiphany occurs twelve days after Christmas, and is notably symbolized by the magi, the three "kings" who traveled to Bethlehem in search of the newborn Christ, as well as by the star that led them . The season extends until the beginning of Lent and offers a time of enlightenment and spiritual growth .

Light in its various manifestations, both physical and metaphysical, occupies a central position in the season and in the hymnody featured during those weeks . Optimism for the future of humanity is palpable following the birth of the Christ in the previous season .

Also celebrated during the Epiphany season is the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, which usually falls on the Sunday after the January 6th Epiphany . The descent of the Holy Spirit at Jesus' baptism by John marks his recognition as the Son of God and the beginning of his earthly ministry .

While scripture is largely silent concerning the years between Christ's birth and his baptism, the time is also appropriate for hymns on the subject of his childhood .

As ever, organ registrations listed in the compositions are basic suggestions intended only as beginning points for creative listening .
