Description

Considered by some to be the most beautiful of the church seasons, Lent is a time for personal introspection, assessment, and honesty. Pretense and avoidance fall away in intimate dialog with deity, as the opportunities for nourishing spiritual growth and hu- man development blossom.

Modeled after the forty days Jesus spent in contemplation in the wilderness, the weeks of Lent encourage thoughts inward toward the eternal as well as our own stance in the present. Forgiveness, resolution and gratitude find prominence in our reflection.

Many Lenten hymns are concerned with a direct experience with God, such as "O Mas- ter, Let Me Walk with Thee," "Lead Me Lord," "Still, Still with Thee," "O for a Closer Walk with God," and "Steal Away."

Other hymns, such as "When Jesus Wept," "A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth," and "Behold the Lamb of God" hint at the suffering to come during Holy Week.

While the mood of the season is largely quiet, it is not morose, but rather, it is hopeful and forward looking. We know what is coming, and this is the time to prepare ourselves in stillness for the eventual joy to burst forth when the time has come.
