Description

A wedding celebrated in the church is a joyous occasion. for the families, it marks the joining of two lines of humanity in a special union of love. for the church, it is an opportunity to focus on God's unconditional love for his children as reflected in the love of the couple for each other.

Love, both divine and human, is a natural topic in the choice of music for the occasion. A variety of lyrical and celebrative hymns that focus on joy, God's love, God's presence throughout life's important moments, as well as his greatness will be appropriate.

Most churches welcome the blessing of weddings, though perspectives vary. A wedding is considered a sacrament in some denominations, with strict guidelines as to what music may be used. Other churches restrict wedding music to what is considered religious within their particular traditions. Yet others require only that the music have uplifting or at least respectable connotations.

Though the hymns in this collection vary widely, it would be difficult to object to any of the sentiments expressed. Most are lyrical, reflecting their themes as stated in the hymns' titles, while some are more active and might give variety to an extended prelude or be used as recessional or postlude. Others, such as "My God, How Endless Is Your Love," "In Heavenly Love Abiding," or "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us" might well serve as interludes at moments like unity candle lighting.
