Description

Margaret Bonds's The Night Shall Be Filled with Music, for SATB a cappella choir with soprano solo, has remained unknown until now. Written for premiere by Albert E. Cain and the Cain Choristers at the "Songs of Freedom" Art Festival in 1965, it is based on a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that encourages us to set aside the poetry of the "grand old masters" and instead choose our favorite poem from some "humbler" author, lending the beauty of our own voice to the poet's rhyme and filling the night with music. Bonds musically interprets this text with characteristic astuteness, producing a short but exquisitely crafted work whose message is clear: when those who are worry-laden celebrate the weary and oppressed, the night shall be filled with lyrical joy.
