EP14597
String Quartet No. 9 (2007) by Gloria Coates is a 26-minute work in two movements:
The first movement is based melodically on Symphony No. 5 (1985), but the material used is a sum of Gloria Coates' musical experiments and innovations from 1971 to 2007. The form is a mirror canon with its apex at the center of a glissando canon which then returns backwards to the beginning in the closed form. The second movement is an open form with new melodic fragments from Symphony No. 5. It is a short movement that suggests heralding of a new world of sound.
Commissioned by Klang.Körper, Festival for Contemporary Music, GEDOK and Deutschlandfunk Radio, String Quartet No. 9 was first performed on June 13, 2008, in Cologne, Germany, by the Kreutzer Quartet.
