Description

By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept, for there they that carried us away captive required of us a song: and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion! How can we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? If I forget thee, O Jerusalem , let my right hand forget her cunning. (Psalm 137)

These lines from Psalm 137 also inspired Arvo Pärt to a "Kyrie Eleison" in 1976, in a variable arrangement for voices and instruments. The movement of the voices is not set to words, but simply to the three vowels of the Kyrie Eleison, i-e-o.

On the invitation of John Metcalf, artistic director of the Vale of Glamorgan festival in Wales/GB, Pärt was able to realise an idea which he had been developing for some time: the transposition and expansion of the work into an instrumental version for brass quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn) and string orchestra.

The première takes place on 9 Sept 2010 in Vale of Glamorgan/GB. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales perform under Tõnu Kaljuste.
