Description

Composed in 1856 as a preliminary round submission for the prestigious Prix de Rome, Georges Bizet's Le Golfe de Baïa is an evocative choral work set to the poetry of Alphonse de Lamartine. Scored for soprano solo, a six-part mixed chorus, and a modest orchestra, the piece beautifully captures the serene imagery of a gentle breeze and a leisurely sailboat ride along a tranquil bay.

Although originally written to fulfill a strict academic requirement, the music's lyrical charm proved undeniable, prompting Bizet to repurpose its opening section years later for his 1865 opera Ivan IV. Presented here in a modern edition by musicologist Hugh Macdonald, this early choral gem offers a fascinating glimpse into the young composer's developing gift for vivid musical storytelling.
