Description

Eighty-two lessons of rhythm exercises, information, and short written worksheets. for group or private instruction. Specifically designed for winds, strings, and voice. The Rhythm Book helps students learn to perform the rhythm patterns they encounter in band, orchestra, choral, solo, and chamber music. The Rhythm Book teaches students to read rhythm not as individual notes but as groups of notes — known as rhythm cells or rhythm chunks. Each exercise in The Rhythm Book teaches a new cell and reviews cells already learned. Once introduced, each rhythm cell recurs throughout the rest of the book — in other words, spiral learning is used. The speech cue method is used throughout. It introduces most new rhythms not on a fixed syllable, but on a carefully selected word. This method makes it easier for students to learn and remember each rhythm cell. Each exercise is designed to be sung or played on an instrument.

With The Rhythm Book, you will...

  • Master the rhythm patterns you perform in band, and orchestra, choir—and in solo and chamber music.
  • Learn to read rhythm not as individual notes but as groups of notes—known a rhythm cells or rhythm chunks.
  • Perform exercises designed to teach you new cells and review cells you have already learned—using "spiral learning."
  • Use the speech cue method—learn new rhythms not on a fixed syllable (such as "ta"), but on a specially selected word.
  • Sing or play an instrument. (For vocalists and wind instruments: phrases are short enough for proper breathing. for string players: bowings are added when necessary).
