Description

Hans Pfitzner composed Die Rose vom Liebesgarten (The Rose from the Garden of Love) between 1897 and 1900 based on a libretto by his friend and fellow student James Grun. Grun had already written the text for Pfitzner's first opera, Der arme Heinrich (1895), and later also provided the first draft of the text for Palestrina (1917), which Pfitzner himself revised. The plot of Die Rose vom Liebesgarten is fictional, but its imagery is drawn from romantic motifs by the painter Hans Thoma, an early patron of the composer.
