Thomas Oboe Lee's Moments Musicaux, Op. 272, represents a joyful return to the solo piano. Realizing it had been ten opuses since his last solo keyboard piece—which was written for the Fender Rhodes—the composer sought a fresh instrumental challenge. He found his muse in Franz Schubert's iconic 1828 piano cycle of the same name, setting out to create his own modern interpretation.

While Sergei Rachmaninoff famously penned his own set of Moments Musicaux in 1896, Lee playfully bypasses the Russian composer's take as a bit too "obtuse," choosing instead to look directly to Schubert for his creative roadmap.
