Description

Timeless legend of Western literature, the myth of Faust embodies humanity's relentless quest for knowledge and power — often at the cost of its soul. First evoked in the 16th century, this fascinating tale has been exalted through literary, theatrical, and musical works whose interpretations may vary, yet retain a common essence: boundless ambition and diabolical temptation. By making a pact with Mephistopheles (the Devil), Faust explores the limits of the human condition, raising profound questions about morality, knowledge, and redemption.

Jean-Jacques Fimbel chose to set to music — in a composition with contemporary sonorities — the pivotal moment of the Devil's proposal. A sarcastic, atonal tone accompanies the Devil, while Faust's questioning is expressed through a tonal melody. Through its timbres, rhythmic patterns, and the choice of its ending, the piece recalls Camille Saint-Saëns' famous Danse Macabre, in which "the Devil exults and whirls in a macabre dance."
