Ouverture for orchestra [2.2.2.2.-2.2.2.0., Timp, Str]

The Ouverture for Orchestra (1942) by Matilde Capuis is an early symphonic work written for a classical orchestra. Stylistically, it stands between late Romantic orchestral tradition and a more modern musical language. The work is also historically notable because its planned premiere in 1942 was prevented for sexist reasons.

The piece was composed during Capuis' studies at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena and already became controversial at its first intended performance. in 1942 the overture was scheduled to be performed at a final concert and broadcast on the radio. When the conductor Antonio Guarnieri realized towards the end of rehearsals that the composer behind the deliberately ambiguous name "M. Capuis" was in fact a woman, he reportedly swept the score from the music stand and shouted: "I will never conduct the work of a woman."
