Description

The joyous season of Christmas is celebrated around the world with renewed goodwill and shared hope for the future as the long-awaited Christ child is welcomed into our midst. The expectations of Advent are fulfilled with a burst of glory as angels appear in the sky, a brilliant star beckons over a small town in the mountains of Judea, shepherds and beasts gather around a manger in Bethlehem, and Mary and Joseph gaze in wonder .

Music for Christmas includes lyrical melodies rising over centuries from diverse cultures, dances of jubilation, lullabies, praise of the Virgin, and explorations into other events associated with the birth .

The season, while one of the two most visible periods during the church year, is a brief one, extending from December 25 to January 6 . The library of music for Christmas, however, is vast . The present collection is a mixture of familiar carols with some less frequently heard gems .

Falling within this period is the changing of the year, for which two additional compositions are provided .

As always, the organist is encouraged to explore various registrations, even unlikely ones, using the list at the beginning of each composition as a beginning point .
